multi instrumentalist and deep house master lars bartkuhn returns to utopia records following his nomad ep in april with a 10 minute masterpiece, an ode to the massai . an epic journey of such depth and positive spirit it perhaps deserves to render a genre all to itself. with its musicality, complex arrangement and phrasing massai is a timeless and personal statement from bartkuhn as he seeks the essence in what dance music can and possibly should be. as a young child growing up in frankfurt, bartkuhn penned his first pieces of music with a synthesizer and sequencer, bought for him by his parents upon realising their son s obsession with music. mastering the guitar as a teenager bartkuhn fell deeply in love with the music of pat metheny, keith jarrett and john coltrane and styles such as soul, funk, brasilian sounds, minimal, dance, and others which is heard in his music today. by the mid 90 s bartkuhn began to explore the deep and soulful side of house music and formed lamaya productions and the now legendary record label needs (not wants) together with his older brother marek bartkuhn and dj yannick. needs rapidly became a synonym for soulful, high quality music and while labeled a house music imprint it was lars input that lead the trio to explore alternative, and at the time unorthodox, musical influences that allowed for original textures and arrangements to be included in their productions. countless remix commissions followed and their sound travelled worldwide with works for francois kevorkian, jazztronik, ennio morricone, atjazz to name a few. to date bartkuhn has produced five solo albums all of which demonstrate a never ending creative flow of ideas and artistic diversity, complexity and passion. after some years away from the dance music scene, residing in brasil, lars decided to continue this journey on volcov s neroli records, followed by a 12- for alex bradley s phonica affiliated utopia records. the latter release, nomad has found its way into the sets of the likes of jeremy underground paris, hunee, antal, ron trent, rainer truby, bicep and mcde to name just a few. it s at this point that bartkuhn gives us massai...his self proclaimed finest work

* nan kolé, producer, dj and head of influential label on-the-rise, gqom oh!, returns to black acre for his debut proper with ‘bayefal’, after first collaborating with nervous horizon’s wallwork on his ‘facts / fyah’ 12” at the back end of 2016. * originally from rome, although now a resident of london, nan kolé has been a major player in the expansion of durban’s gqom sound after discovering it in early 2015. through his label, gqom oh!, he honed in on a network of south african producers operating out of durban, unlocking the keys to a world of music largely untapped by audiences outside of southern and western africa. * ‘bayefal’, he explains, was made while still living in rome and was inspired by a group he formed called pepesoup, which consisted of an italo-liberian singer, karima 2g, and senegalese percussionist and singer, moustapha mbengue. “for me, he (mbengue) was a mentor and taught me a lot spiritually but also mentally”, kolé explains, “and without his hard work i wouldn’t be here for sure. this track is dedicated to him, as he s a muslim bayefal.” a joyous, steadfast drum workout made in the carnival spirit, ‘bayefal’ also serves as an ode to his love for both west african rhythms and more specifically, the gqom sound. * on the flip, ‘malumz’ — backed up with two dark, brooding remixes by durban’s citizen boy and crew, formation boyz — is another track rooted in personal experience. “malumz is a tribute to my gqom oh! family”, kolé explains. “they call me malumz, which in zulu means ‘uncle’. the first time citizen boy called me ‘malumz’, it was overwhelming — i felt a change in my relationship with all the guys, because they started to treat me more as a family member, which meant a lot.” * the original mix, a stark, pulsing drum-track dotted with playful whistles and bleepy sampling again celebrates kolé’s fascination with the gqom sound, while first citizen boy and then formation boyz flip ‘malumz’ with harsher, grittier tones and crunching, industrial textures.

seasoned memory athletes will no doubt recall the turbo’s past affiliation with the former soviet union (proxy, tiga tigayevich khristorozhdestvensky), and recent geopolitical developments have prompted the label to once again hedge its bets. our a&r team spent countless hours sifting through layer after layer of russian underground music, a shocking amount of which turned out to be fake soundcloud accounts from producers based in florida. in fact, our best intelligence suggests that dimitri veimar may be the only person making music in russia today. for the 30 minutes a day he is not trading in politically moderate twitter-bot futures, veimar produces dark, raw-dog electro. he has already released music with omnidisc and renate, so it makes little sense to us why we have to communicate with him via a mole in the canadian embassy in moscow, which is further complicated by the fact that the mole is also an aspiring dj/producer whom we have to keep happy at all costs. you have no idea how much has been sacrificed in order to shield you from the realpolitik of international dance music.

after 18 12- singles and eps, cgi has finally found a record suited for its first full-length lp release, hurt plaza from atlanta s own pamela_ and her sons. pamela_ is the solo music project of alessandra hoshor, an atlanta-based multimedia artist, and 1/2 of evil dance project big ded. their microtonal compositions build up from slow perceptual movements into heavy dance sets full of deconstructed vocals. pamela_ is microtonal, cerebral dance music. fragmented, off-kilter anxiety techno with an emphasis on texture, pattern, and rhythm. familiar palettes are rearranged and presented in a form completely alien, opening new pathways to what is possible within the realm of electronic composition without ever underestimating the power of suggestion…effectively like looking into the eyes of your best friend for the first time agai

* limited edition gatefold 2lp set with printed inner sleeves. * following their surprising debut on cassette tape in past february, magamura put out the vinyl version of supernaturals. comprised of eril fjord and laurine frost, the hungarian duo have carved out their reputation through live performances at renowned festivals and venues like arma in moscow, combining the formar’s indie aestheric and the electronic music prowess the latter has proved on work for the nervmusic imprint. despite their huge influence from the 70-80s experimental music, supernaturals is not so much retrospective as ominously dystopian. it captures and distils their well-known improvisational mutability into a testament to their promising potential, which will stand the test of time. this is kebko music’s first instalment on vinyl. following our tradition of carefully-wrought artwork, the lp comes in a gatefold sleeve designed by damien tran. * kebko music is tokyo-based akiko kiyama’s independent music label focusing on releasing avant-garde music which is not bounded by any specific genres but embraces the whole range of techno, experimental music, field- & live-recordings and classical music. the label owner established her name by richie hawtin featuring her track in his well-known de9 transitions mix in 2005. since then, her music style has gradually changed to explore the edge of electronic music. the core of the label is based on small handcrafted editions of cassette tapes. it aims to give a chance for all of artists and listeners to explore their musical experience and creativity.

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production. using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music. the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, pt.3 is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one. onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the far east and the producer s own development over the preceding 10 years.

for the seventh in most excellent unlimiteds series of collaborations with danny krivit, the exalted editor reshapes two classics that regularly lit up the loft and the paradise garage. wars epic 1972 instrumental city country city drops its placid pastoral vibes in favor of a solely urban approach, trimmed from the lp version s ten minutes to a fighting weight of six. searing solos cresting over war s trademark latin funk make it plain why this has long been a foundation cut for deeper dancefloors. the flip sees mr. k showing off his skills at the edit block with a meticulous tightening of jakkis sun,sun, sun - the original record, a feel-good, warm weather mood- lifter, was notorious for awkward tape edits (now known to be the work of walter gibbons) that for years left djs frustrated as they attempted to achieve smooth blends in the face of shifting tempos and downbeats. krivit pulls the pieces of this larry levan favorite apart and reassembles them as only a veteran audio mechanic could do, giving the tune the logical musical arc it never had. while each of these tracks previously existed as singles, this is the first

madcap and jaybee team up to create the musical masterpiece called “settle down”. the song starts out rather jazzy, with it’s smooth rhodes keys and heavy cymbal riding drum lines. when the song hits the breakdown, the whole tone of the tune changes. the punchy sub bassline is unleashed and becomes one of the driving forces of the track. echoing reggae style vocals are beautifully weaved into the background of the track, transforming the vibe into a reggae/dub style d&b classic. the amen drums also help to create an intoxicating energy that make this one a sure thing for dance floor mayhem. instant classic!
“hear comes” takes over where “settle down” left off. the song begins with big amen drums, backed with a reggae style skanking guitar chop. during the breakdown, a thoughtful roots reggae vocal sample is introduced that helps lift the track into a true dubwise gem. when the drop hits, the baseline kicks in and begins to wobble and throb behind all the deep atmospherics. the track has a beautiful breakdown, which takes the listener to a more melodic place. after a moment of serenity, the song breaks back into the chaotic old school flavor, which madcap does so well. this one’s a beauty!!

undefined is back and extending the legend saga with the highly experienced, creative genius todd sines. todd began creating music in the late 80’s, ranging from post-punk and industrial, to techno and house. while digging through his material on discogs, one can easily notice the great variety of sounds he has developed throughout the years, using multiple aliases like .xtrak and enhanced.

now in its second decade, with a steady stream of the most forward thinking and cutting edge techno productions, drumcode has one of the biggest selections of releases from industry heavy hitters, whilst not forgetting its future by bringing the newest talented producers into the limelight, where layton giordani is now a name firmly within that line up. the young new york based producer first had recognition back in 2014, and his debut release came via drumcode with his track rivington on the a-sides vol5 compilation in 2016. full force into 2017, drumcode has announced the release of layton s debut album with where it begins consisting of 12 original tracks, the album packs a punch when it comes to no-nonsense techno. successfully weaving relentless drums and catchy vocal hooks into a selection of thick, brooding, atmospheric tracks.

following rhythm büro’s debut release last year, the kiev-based label has returned with a successive rb002. in a similar vein to their first release, this release features vero and na nich as well as a welcome addition from an up-and-coming ukrainian producer, lobanov k. a2 finds a remix from the notable and much-applauded dj’s dj, eric cloutier. sonically, the record ranges from deeper, housey motifs and dubbed-out techno ventures on the a-side to electro-esque and slightly weirder break-beat expositions on the b-side.

new imprint ocd’s first release comes from portland native aaron carlson who, with his ac$ alias, has generated quite a buzz in underground circles of late, off the back of a few highly sought-after records. ‘do u know what u represent?’ is a slice of rolling tech-house that utilises vocal snippets amidst a flurry of 909 hats while the rhodes-laced ’more odds’ dials up the swing with a nod to early prescription releases. on the b side, ‘just like you’ is a more heady affair, seeing lazy chords sitting over a nebulous bassline and assorted weirdness, while the acid-tinged, atmospheric ‘organ morph’ is sure to find favour with fans of binh or nicolas lutz.

after multiple cassette and 12” releases through kastil’s stale in 2016, it’s time for irazu’s latest addition to the series of complex techno works. “shtamm” is a package that contains four original cuts + a remix by specialist of high-end machine music regis. “refused to be found” is a soaring travel through moods and sonic landscapes which at times resonates like a helicopter flying through an inner city estate building. the aesthetic nature of the opening track is extended through “shtamm”. a multi dimensional piece of work that showcases a more submersive side of irazu s broad pallette. “last hours” is a cinematic stroke of vivid pads that sound like they were extracted from a remastered russian thriller classic. regis opens ups the b-side with a rework of “shtamm”. the off-beat machine funk of the remix leaves little of the original mix intact, yet regis has turned it into a staggering piece of ferocity. “torso” is another irazu original that sound like 7.5 minutes of vigorous rhythms and swerving perc elements.

vitalik continue their vinyl gold series with another gold standard release. for the forthcoming vitnyl003 clive henry drops a fifteen minute long opus on a single sided limited edition vinyl. my fifteen minutes of fame is contrastingly raw in it s production and sublime in composition. it s gentle meandering melodies float over a warm bed of muted pads and analogue bass. recorded as a live jam and stripped down to its constituent parts its melodies take centre stage, enthralling the listener into what can be best described as an acid house lullaby and what has already been penned as an instant balearic classic. my fifteen minutes of fame was engineered by rui da silva and is the former peace division front man s first solo release since his illustrious studio partnership with justin drake, he joins artists such as jimmy edgar, the mole, franklin de costa and anonym on the vinyl only vitalik offshoot.

any disco dj worth their weight in vinyl knows the name donnell pitman, and until now this has been mostly due to his highly sought after work of the late 70s and early 80s. renewed interest in donnell has reached critical peak over the past few years, fueled by red greg’s feature of donnell’s seminal “love explosion” on joey negro’s under the influence vinyl compilation series and chicago’s numero group putting out long forgotten, unreleased boogie bangers “burning up” and “taste of honey” in 2015.
it was this refreshed enthusiasm that caught the attention of producer kumar mcmillian of chicago-based disco ensemble wings of sunshine. kumar’s group was looking for another vocal collaborator following their 7” debut release on star creature records. a casual introduction led to an informal studio session between the two culminating in a modern disco masterpiece.
